MAID in massachusetts

MAID in Massachusetts: A Citizens' Advocacy Campaign

Our goal is for Massachusetts to legalize
a compassionate end-of-life option
for mentally capable adults
suffering from a terminal illness.

Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) is a strictly voluntary, physician-approved process whereby a mentally capable adult with a terminal illness, defined has having six months or fewer to live, can request access to life-ending medication that can be self-administered. Only two-thirds of those who request the medication actually use it. For those who do, the cause of death is, by statute, the underlying illness, not suicide.

There are two bills in the Massachusetts 2025-26 legislative session, House Bill 2505 and Senate Bill H1486, that would legalize MAID. The house bill is in the Joint Committee on Healthcare Finance, which has already approved the senate bill.  The senate bill is in the Senate Ways and Means Committee. Twenty-four of the forty state senators are listed as co-sponsors of this bill. If it can be moved out of committee to the senate floor for debate and vote, it should pass.

MAID in Massachusetts is gathering supporters from all over the state whose names can be added as co-signers to letters to their legislators and to legislative leaders. So far, almost 700 Massachusetts voters have joined this effort, with many more to come.

To add your name to this endeavor, send an email to [email protected]. Provide your name and either your home address or the names of your state senator and state representative.

If you wish to contact your representatives directly, either by phone or email, all the information you need, including a sample letter, is here.

MAID in Massachusetts is a voluntary, non-profit activity led by Stephen D. Senturia, a resident of Lexington, Massachusetts
